Join CHI's CEO Dr Lígia Teixeira at 3pm, Friday 3 April as she talks to Dr Al Story and Prof. Andrew Hayward, authors of the COVID-19 Homeless Sector Plan. The plan aims to avoid concentrated outbreaks of the disease that would likely spread quickly among people experiencing homelessness. It was initially introduced in London and is now being rolled out nationally in England by a large team working at breakneck speed to put in place systems to protect people who are homeless from the potentially devastating effects caused by COVID-19.

NHS England, Public Health England, the Great London Authority (which represents all 32 London Boroughs), and the UK Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Authorities are all part of the team, as are general practitioners (GPs) with extensive experience in providing outreach services for the homeless and outreach specialists in London and nationwide.

The plan proposes decisive action, by triaging homeless people with COVID 19 symptoms into COVID-CARE facilities and those at high risk of complications of COVID 19 into COVID PROTECT facilities. These facilities are primarily hotels with single rooms and ensuite facilities to minimise risk of transmission.  

Andrew Hayward is Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Inclusion Health Research at University College London (London, UK) and Dr Alistair Story is Founder and Clinical Lead of the pan-London Find & Treat Service based out of University College London Hospitals, which for several years has been helping diagnose cases of tuberculosis among the homeless population in London, UK.
